Common Materials For Marine Furniture

Wood furniture is manufactured using materials such as solid wood, plywood, laminated panels, and particleboard. Key characteristics of wood furniture include excellent formability, strong decorative appeal, natural grain patterns, ease of processing, and relatively light weight.


Wood materials encompass both solid wood and engineered wood products (such as plywood and particleboard). While wood possesses good toughness and malleability, it is susceptible to the effects of humidity and salt spray; consequently, it requires specialized treatments for corrosion resistance, moisture proofing, and fire protection. To meet fire-retardant requirements, fireproof laminates are frequently applied to the surfaces.


In terms of materials, steel furniture typically falls into categories such as painted or powder-coated steel furniture, aluminum-composite furniture, and stainless steel furniture.
Beyond standard steel, metal furniture also includes items made from aluminum alloys and stainless steel. Aluminum furniture is lightweight, making it well-suited for ship interiors; steel furniture offers high structural strength but comes with higher costs and greater density; meanwhile, iron furniture is relatively lower in cost. Metal furniture generally exhibits superior strength, stability, abrasion resistance, and corrosion resistance, enabling it to effectively withstand the rolling and vibrations inherent to shipboard environments.


Additionally, common materials used for marine furniture include Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP), marble, aluminum-composite panels/aluminum honeycomb panels, and hybrid wood-metal structures. GRP offers excellent impact resistance and corrosion resistance; however, being a relatively brittle material, it must be protected from heavy loads and physical impacts. Marble features high hardness and abrasion resistance, making it suitable for furniture applications subject to significant pressure; however, its substantial weight necessitates careful attention to structural stability. As a modern material, aluminum-composite panels and aluminum honeycomb panels address the structural strength and aesthetic variety limitations of traditional aluminum furniture, achieving a level of quality comparable to that of wood-based panel furniture. Hybrid wood-metal structures combine the respective advantages of both wood and metal materials.


When selecting materials for marine furniture, priority should be given to materials that are corrosion-resistant, waterproof, and lightweight-such as stainless steel, aluminum alloys, or specially treated polymer materials-in order to effectively adapt to the humid, high-salinity, and space-constrained environment of a ship. Conversely, the use of untreated wood-which is susceptible to moisture absorption, deformation, and decay-should be avoided.
